These are the 90-point wines we’re tasting tonight at 6 p.m.
The Best of WineHarvest
The Reds
Craggy Range Winery Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008
“Smooth and polished, weaving a hint of licorice into the huckleberry, raspberry and plum flavors. A wave of mineral character adds to the depth on the long, refined finish. Drink now through 2016.” Wine Spectator: 93 Points
“The 2008 Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir is very ripe and sweet on the nose with dark plum, a touch of soy and violets. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, really lovely balance, a Pinot that caresses the mouth with sweet ripe raspberry and strawberry flavors. Velvety mouthfeel. Excellent. Wine Advocate: 91 Points
2007 Bodegas Ateca Atteca
The 2007 Atteca was sourced from 80- to 120-year-old head pruned Garnacha vines and aged for 10 months in seasoned French oak. Deep purple-colored, it exhibits an impressive nose of crushed stone, black cherry, and plum. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with layers of savory fruit, spice notes, and silky tannin. This balanced effort will evolve for another 1-2 years and drink well through 2017. Wine Advocate 90 Points
Marquis Philips Sarah’s Blend 2007
A blend of 62% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Super ripe plum jam with dark chocolate richness, black currant and briar fruit on the nose. Soft, round and gentle with aromas of marzipan, complex black currant fruit, and hints of peppermint and smoky sweet vanilla. On the palate, ripe red berries, vibrant, soft and round, gentle medium bodied structure and black fruit are found. Long, integrated tannins and some oak lactone influence also exist. Robert Parker: 90 Points
Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
“Savory herb and ripe currant, berry and plum aromas are firm and intense. Full-bodied and well-structured, with the tannins gaining traction on the finish. Rustic but balanced. Best from 2010 through 2016.” Wine Spectator: 92 Points
Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
“One for the cellar. Shows a dramatic structure of firm, dusty tannins, brightened with acidity, framing complex, long and deep flavors of black currants, cassis, dark unsweetened chocolate, smoky cedar, anise and spices, undergirded by a firm minerality. Best after 2010 and through 2014, at least.” Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points
“Intense purple hue. Blueberry and mint aromas with light graphite undertones. Apparent anise, blackberry and new oak give way to combed tannins and a nervy edge of fresh acidity. A fleshy, intense Cab.” The Wine News: 94 Points
The Best of WineHarvest
The Whites
Roederer Estate Brut, Non-Vintage, from North Coast, California
“This is an absolutely first-rate bubbly, dry, smooth and rich. Has complex flavors of peaches, limes and strawberries, accented by doughy yeast and smoky flavors. Really defines the balanced elegance and pedigree you want in a great sparkler.” Wine Enthusiast: 92 Points
“Fragrant fruit ripeness lends this wine penetrating flavors of raspberry essence, tart pear and green apple, a fine mesh of pinot noir and chardonnay. The texture is smooth, the bubbles bringing a touch of yeastiness and almond flavor to balance the freshness of the fruit. A lovely, tightly structured Brut to serve with wood-roasted snapper and hen of the woods.” Wine & Spirits: 92 Points
Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling 2001
This famous Riesling comes from the choice slopes of Ribeauvillé overlooking the Trimbach winery.
Cuvée Frédéric Emile is made solely from very ripe grapes, picked selectively at the end of the harvest. Dry and firmly-structured, but very fruity, this multifaceted wine owes its great depth of flavour to the combination of Riesling grapes with ideal soil. Robert Parker: 93 Points
Dr. Loosen Dr. L Estate Riesling 2008
“Sleek and tangy, showing apricot, lime and mango flavors matched to a lively structure. Shows good harmony and persistence through the finish. Drink now through 2018.” Wine Spectator: 90 Points #62 WS Top 100 of 2009
Spring Mountain Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2006
“From a relatively late season for sauvignon, this wine fermented in neutral French oak and built its substantial mineral tones through ageing in barrel on the lees. At first, the leesy smokiness rides over the fruit, with lime persisting underneath. The layers of earthy flavor emerge with air, the oak recedes and the quincelike fruit blasts forward, fresh and remarkably clear. A confident Napa Valley style adopted from Bordeaux, this deserves some bottel age and pan-roasted Dover sole with chanterelles.” Wine & Spirits: 93 Points
Far Niente Chardonnay 2007
“Pure, clean, rich and layered green apple, pear, spice and nutmeg give this a tight focus. Full-bodied, intense yet supple, with a long, fruity finish. Drink now through 2012.” Wine Spectator: 91 Points
“Far Niente’s beautiful 2007 Chardonnay Estate offers up copious aromas of lemon blossoms, poached pears, and brioche, crisp acidity, a hint of tropical fruits, a greenish-light gold color, and medium to full-bodied, elegant, pure flavors. It should drink well for 3-4 years.” The Wine Advocate: 91 Points
